July has been enriched and enlivened by a visit from our Californian friend Jack, last seen in Borneo, but now with Sylv in the gardens of Burton Agnes, Yorkshire – somewhere most visitors get to see as it’s one of the loveliest examples of a historic house and garden anywhere. Among other things, we also had a look at my ‘adopted’ book in the Wren Library at Lincoln Cathedral.

Below is a smaller but more unusual house with the most idiosyncratic windows we’ve ever looked through – and some curious rooms inside, as you might expect.  You can find out more about the two ladies who had it built and their decision that it should only be passed on to unmarried women. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/a-la-ronde
