There seems to have been a real growth in interest in walled gardens over the last few years, with many restoration projects bringing them back into use.  One of the most impressive we have seen lately is the one at Helmsley, which is currently having a bit of a re-design following its restoration a few years ago. Even though it’s early days, the signs are very promising and it’s a joy to walk round.  Volunteer gardeners are ready to chat to you and many of the raised veg plots are rented to local gardeners in what seems like a clever ‘everybody wins’ arrangement.  There’s a nice cafe in the old vinery, too – but what is nicer than the sight of real terracotta pots and the smell of good soil?
