A half hidden gem along the road to Scarborough, Scampston has a wonderful walled garden laid out relatively recently by Piet Oudolf (apparently famous in the world of garden design). It’s full of unusual features, not least a mound which functions as a viewing area so that, unlike most gardens, you can see the whole layout in one sweep.  Beyond the garden is the ‘Cascade Walk’ which takes in woodland, lakes and a Palladian Bridge as well as providing views of some stately trees – and one, the Spanish Chestnut, which dates back over 300 years.  Nice cafe too.
