Washington DC

There’s a huge swathe of Washington, centred around the Mall (not, for once a shopping mall) dedicated to memorials and monuments. The Washington Monument is a massive stone spire towering over the skyline and apparently the world’s tallest stone structure.  Roughly half a mile away is the Lincoln Memorial (above) which contains the famous Lincoln statue and, engraved on the interior walls, the Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural speech, which contains these words:  “It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God’s assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men’s faces…”  You find the most radical statements in the most unlikely places!
